Mag wheel conversion question
30 Jun 2016 13:56
Hey guys new here. I have a 1979 Kz650 that I'm rebuilding. The spoked wheels were not in good condition so I decided to get some mags off eBay . I read that a 16" rear wheel from a Kz550 will fit. This is true right? Anyway I received the wheel today . Looking at it I see the rubber damper is inside the wheel. Does that come out? I want to get these powder coated and obviously can't with rubber in there. Thanks

Yes, the rubber shock damper will come out. It's probably held in place by a small amount of adhesive & also just stuck from being in there for 30+ yrs. I would test fit the wheel before doing anything.
powder coating. I don't know much about it, but keep in mind that the stuff can be thick, so it could affect how stuff fits.

Do you mean the rear coupling assy? .... aka sprocket carrier. I use the diagrams at Partzilla.

I'm assuming so. I tried to post a pic but it says it's too large. The wheel is off an 82 kz550 ltd. I removed the Cush drive plate. The plate has an area that looks like another part meshes with. I don't have my bike here it's at the shop . I can't compare.

If you are trying to post a pic from your phone, text the pic to yourself and then save it. It will have been resized smaller and then you will be able to upload it here.
Here's a picture of the rear wheel (This was a 550 but.. same basics) I uploaded from my phone for reference to which part you are questioning:

If you want an 18" wheel, a cast alloy wheel from a 1980 650F or 80-83 550A should fit. the 650F is probably a tube-type (TT). the 550A wheels are tubeless & will have Tubeless cast into the wheel. but the A1 might be TT.

I wondered the same thing - 16"? I assumed he has a CSR and didn't want to change the ride configuration. My 650 has an 18" rear wheel.

Thanks guys. It's a 16" I'm going with. This is easiest way to keep the stock drum set up in the rear. It's a 79 kz650 B. I found a 1980 550 16" on eBay . I'll probably buy that.
