Handlebar holes for positioning pins

I noticed a couple of the items that go on the handlebars have small pins in them that fit into holes on the original bars. The new handlebars I got do not have these holes. I have no problem drilling the holes, I'm just wondering what other people do - drill the holes or remove the pins?

The pins keep them things from spinning,over kill in my book.

PITA. I remove the pins and use a small cut off from a hose clamp. It digs into the bar and makes it clamp firmer. No twist. Also my new control for the horn didn't work right. That cured it and completed the ground.

Yeah my last bike didn't have anything like this, and I haven't seen it anywhere else. Usually just the two screws around the factory clamp were enough to keep things in place. Plus its nice to be able to rotate the controls to match the position of the handlebars. It's not like everyone sits exactly the same way on a bike.

@swest -- Do you mean you're using a small length of the hose clamp strap underneath the pieces, or are you using part of the screw assembly somehow?

I clip 1/2' piece of the threaded part and use it like a shim. The gaps are sharp and dig into the bar.

Clearance is needed so that the inside end of the rubber hand-grip does not contact and rub against the end of the handlebar.

The stock throttle assembly locating pin inside the drilled handlebar hole helps assure against inadvertent positioning of the assembly too far onto the handlebar, which may cause the grip to contact and rub against the end of the handlebar, which can interfere with freedom of movement and full closure of carbs in that critical final nth of movement necessary at the carb bell-crank.

me also. it was pretty easy using a titanium coated drill bit.

Yeah this was why I posed the question to begin with -- there's a lot of opinions either way. I think once I get a little closer to mounting my control back on the bars I'll just go ahead and drill the holes. Doesn't take too long to measure the position and it sounds like there's some safety reasons for doing it.
