Fork Leg Leaking ? was created by kzdcw
I noticed after I rode my 77' KZ1000A, there was a little fork oil leaking underneath the left tube under the axle clamp rear stud ? So I'm assuming that the allen bolt at the bottom of the outer fork tube is either loose or the gasket if any is bad ?

Question, without dismantling the fork, can I just remove the fork assembly and try to tighten the allen bolt or replace the gasket ?

I was hoping to do this while the fork is assembled and the allen bolt would be easy to remove ?

Any Help with this procedure would be Greatly Appreciated :) :)

I take them out fully assembled. You can try tightening it or use RTV if it still leaks. Sometimes a sharp rap with a hammer on thee wrench will loosen it.

Steve, I 'm assuming with the fork assembled, there would be enough compression inside the fork with the spring and therefore not require a special tool to put pressure on the fork cylinder to allow the allen bolt to tighten or loosen ?

I'm I on the right track ?

Also, there appears to be a copper washer behind the allen allen bolt # 44041-040 . Is that a 10mm washer ?

Yup. See if you can tighten it. Mine are 40 years old and still work.

I've never seen one leak there, but you are on the right track. No need to remove the forks to see if the bolt is loose, that can be done easily, but that is where the easy stops most the time. Chances are if it's loose the whole inner cylinder will turn when you try to tighten it. Usually you will need an impact tool to tighten or loosen the allen, unless you are real lucky. Without an impact tool the forks will need to come off and the special tool used, or improvise a way to hold the inner cylinder. Lots of guys use Loctite to make matters even worse.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I'll go for a short ride tomorrow then when I get back, will tackle it.

I'm hoping once I jack up the front end and remove the front tire/wheel that the allen will be easy to get at, then hopefully tighten.

I'm thinking that it is the copper gasket or washer that appears to be on the bolt from what I could see from the fork diagrams?
