Kz1000 compatible questions was created by kevin860
What's up guys I recently scored a barns find which is a 1980 kz1000. I'm going to be turning it into a bobber because I prefer that look more. I found a kz550 with a hardtail rear end and a custom tank, that I want on craigslist but I am unsure of some things. My questions are if I pick up the 550 will the 550 tank fit on my 1000 and are the frames made with the same size tubing? Because if they are I'd be able to just chop the hardtail rear end off the 550 and weld it on my 1000. I'm definantly going to make a thread of my build and most likely will have more questions for you guys. Id appreciate it if anyone could help me out on this one, thanks guys. I attached 2 Pics to back my questions up, the first is my 1000 and the 2nd pic is the bike I would be using for parts

Bummer
That's a nice save able bike. I had one when they were new. Want to sell it?

You should generally be able to ask sellers questions...in this case, what size tubing was used for the 550 he is selling.

Quite fine that you prefer the bobber look. Everyone has their own tastes. Many people here wld shudder in their boots to see that bike chopped up. You could however very easily pick a more suitable choice for your project starter. However with a bit of time and elbow grease, that LTD1000 would clean up quite nicely and have considerably more value for a sale or trade for a better base bike for what you want to build. A bit of TLC with that bike would go a whole lot farther than you might think toward your goal. Just sayin'. Good luck.................Mike

Off the top of my head the 550 has smaller, narrower wheels, is a single backbone tube frame (1000 is a triple backbone) and much smaller tubing.

The 550 in stock trim, going up against a stock 1000 is something like a half second slower. Personally i would clean up the 1000 and sell if you must have a hardtail.

my bikes; 80kz1000(project), 77 gl1000, 74 h2 (project)
Past; 78 kz1000, 83 kz550

Well you see the only reason I wanted to keep the 1000 and chop that up is because I heard these motors are bad ass and have good power, I also like the fact it is a 4 cylinder kick start. I still have some decisions to make but what I get is that the 550 doner bike won't work, thanks guys

Back in my day that was the undisputed king of bikes. I'm not trying to be a downer on your project but there is a guy on Craigslist that has cleaned out the supply of old Kawasaki s around here. Take a full can of WD 40 and hose the whole bike down with it ( not the seat) and then leave it alone for a couple days. Then take a rag soaked with more WD 40 and start wiping the bike down. Pull the carbs and clean the hell out of them. Then go get a nice new battery and start it up. Spend some time with this bike in stock form and get to know it , I'm sure you will love it! I'm in the Central Valley of California and would happily trade you a decent roller xs650 Yamaha for a bobber project if it penciled out for both of us

I'd restore it and sell it or keep it and ride the piss out of it. There are bikes that have been hacked up and left waiting for someone to finish them. I see it all the time. What I don't understand how the owners want more than a stock bike was worth unfinished.

AMEN to that! A really good "Badass" bike as U say. for building what you want is an old-school 750(FOUR) Honda. They did make cool looking choppers back in the day and were a common sight and had a one-of-a-kind sound to them, and had quite a following. And I still them cruising down the road to this day. I wasn't a Honda fan in those days but the chopper look was quite intriguing.
Visit this site... www.hondachopper.com/...and you may be quite amazed at what U find. Just one example out of hundreds is pictured here. Happy searching!............................Mike

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationJust a footnote Kevin...give that LTD1000 a good thorough cleaning, and you cld buy a shop full of these () oldschool 750(FOUR) Honda project bikes for what you would get for the LTD1000. Just a thought to help you realize your dream of a Badass Bobber. Vroom-vroom!........................Mike
