This flew off my '78 KZ 650. What is it?
08 Nov 2015 11:10
So the other day I had massive brake failure where my rear wheel locked up and I skidded to a stop from 60 mph. As far as I can tell it was caused by an unsecured torque link. During the process this piece flew off and after consulting the manual I cannot figure out where it came from. Any ideas?

I don't recall ever seeing anything like it on my KZ650, could it be something that was on the road from another vehicle?

Someone fabricated that part. How about a few pics of the rear hub and front of the swingarm?

Looks like a bracket someone used, maybe to support/stop the center stand from hitting the chain.
Do you have a stock exhaust on your bike?
How about some pictures of the old girl?

Here are some photos of the bike. As you can see, the brake cam lever got totally trashed when my wheel locked up. There was no center stand when I bought it, and I have an aftermarket 4 into 1 exhaust. Also worth noting is that the torque link was not bolted between the 2 mounting brackets as it should have, but bolted onto the side of the inner one. Whoever had this bike before me did a real number on it.

Look at the adjustment rod.
No clue of where that piece came from.
I'd go over the bike and make sure all hardware is torqued to spec.

Dont know what that bracket is, looks like the rear torque link bolt fell off. That should be secured with a bolt, castle nut and cotter pin on both ends.

Did a lining separate from one of the brake shoes or did something else cause the rear wheel to lock up?
