Speedometer cable help
08 Jun 2015 21:36
I built a bike out of some old Kaw parts and want to get the speedometer to work. These are the build parts I used for the bike.
***PARTS LIST***
1978 KZ1000 frame
1976 Z1 motor
1976 bodywork and controls
1980 1000C triple trees
1982 1000P forks, front and rear wheel
1982 GS1100 swingarm
I know I will need the longer C or P speedometer cable, but since the drive is from a 1982 1000P and the dash is from a 1976 KZ900 I'm not sure what cable I need. Will a J model speedo cable hook up to a KZ speedometer?

I think KZ speedometer cables are universal fit. You could compare them at Z1Enterprises.com or ask, or compare eebbaayy pics.

Most japanese bikes from that period have the same speedo fittings as far as I know, you probably dont even need a Kawasaki one.The only differences would be in length. If you run a piece of heavy electrical cable down the front of the bike and cut it to size, you can take it to a bike shop and get the speedo cable at the length you need.
The other thing to think about is,will the drive in the 82 1000p wheel be a compatable with the 76 speedo. Even if you find a cable with the right connections and the right length, you could be working with different ratios which will make your speedo run too fast or too slow.
Or not!
Good luck

I thought the gear ratio was controlled by the drive unit on the wheel, not the speedometer?

if it fits the wheel and reaches the speedo it will work , the top is pretty much universal the bottom i've seen with screw on and set screw styles but most import bikes use the same ratio . so whatever you have to fit your wheel should be fine.
