Drum Brake Noise

Hey everyone
I just replaced my rear drum brake shoes on my 81 KZ550 with new EBC shoes. The brake works as it should but when it gets warm after a few minutes of riding, there is a loud chirping noise when the brake is applied. With a normal disc brake setup I would assume something needs to be lubed to get rid of the noise but drum brakes are new to me. Is there supposed to be lube anywhere on the new shoes or is the noise just part of the shoes breaking in?

No lube should be used on the friction surfaces of brakes (pads/shoes) was there a lip of corrosion or anything on the drum when you took it apart? Surfaces all look straight and clean?

How did you adjust the brake pedal? Noise isnt really normal with brakes SOME is, but excessive brake noise isn't normal

shouldn't be hearing a chirping.
a nice smooth lite swoosh dragging noise on setup.
and,
shouldn't really be getting a noise when riding and stopping.

This may not be the problem, but it has been reported here on KZR that some EBC brake shoes don't fit right --- I think they're too big or something. If possible, I would remove them & compare them to the old shoes. If they appear the same visually, I would try sanding the leading edges of them & also sand the glaze off the drum (ASBESTOS WARNING: DO NOT BREATHE THE DUST). If that doesn't work, then I'd get oem or Vesrah brake shoes. I think the Vesrah part number is VB-412

The Z1's were notorious for the brake squeak. That was normal. In your case I think the drum may be glazed. I'd try spinning the wheel while holding some 150 grit paper on a sanding block to clean off the glaze. Look for oil staining too. If they're cintered (high metal content) brake shoes they will wear away the drum faster and could make noise.

My rear drum has always squeaked when stopping using the stock pads ..... so much I've gotten into a bad habit and don't hardly ever use it.

Had it off quite a few times in the last 35 years and after sanding it and the drum a little it stops for about 8-10 stops but always glazes up and returns. I even tried lightly drilling it to "maybe" throw off harmonics (vibrating) but it didn't help either.

New Ferodo pads on my front disc squeaked so bad I put the stockers back on (which are dead quiet) and plan on replacing them with the stock pads off my parts bike which are is really gd shape when I rebuild the caliber and change the fluid maybe this summer. Read that's a common problem too.
