Sprocket locking tabs Necessary ? was created by kzz1king
I am replacing the spoked rim on my Zee with a mag. The nuts on the sprocket carrier are round on the bottom so I don't think the thin metal locking piecesI bought will work. Are they needed? Just tighten them down good? Use loctite? Thanks.

Nyloc locking nuts might be another way to do it for a low mileage well maintained bike, but the plates are there for a reason as that part gets a lot of vibration. IIRC The thread is metric fine or superfine pitch, not the easiest to source.

You don't need those locking tabs unless you are restoring the bike to original specs. In 35 years of working on bikes I have never seen a bolt come loose on the sprocket carrier, ever. Just torque them down to specs and your good. The OEM's stopped using those years ago.

The flat side of the nut goes towards the lock tab. If you have new lock tabs, use them.

I have, once on a puny z200, although I suspect it had been maintained by a chimp.

I don't have any on mine and the guy on ebay wants $50 for a NOS one. Use lock washers if you're concerned.

Interesting. The stock nuts on my KZ650-C1 do not have that round section. According to the parts diagrams (see 1974 Z1 diagram below) the 1974 Z1 uses the same part number (#42045-005) as the KZ650-C1. Is it possible someone swapped yours before you bought the bike? Below the diagram is a picture of the 42045-005 nuts. Ed

I am putting a later model cast tubeless type rim on Ed. It is a 16 " drum brake. I dont know what year or model Kawi it is from. My Z! stock sprocket carrier looks like what you posted.
