Dual Disk on 1977 Z650

Correct, the caliper brackets are side-specific, thus why I would need a RH -specific Z1000 caliper/bracket assembly. That way the bleed/vent is on the top of the unit as well.

IIRC the singe disk calipers have a larger bore than the dual disk. they will be less effective with a 5/8 MC

think its the other way round. He will definitely need a 5/8 master for twin disk to be effective

Sorry that was a bit vague. to clarify; There are two different calipers in the 77-80 range. there is a 42mm bore and a 38mm. Kawasaki produced the 38mm calipers for the dual disk setups in 77 and 78. In 79 they switch all calipers to 42mm, perhaps as a cost savings. Two 42mm calipers will absolutely work with a 5/8mm MC but will not be as firm as two 38mm. Since the goal here is to improve braking performance i would get the 38mm calipers, and i sure as hell would not run two 7mm single disks.

Trust me I've tried a twin disc set up with a single disc MC and you just don't get anywhere near any stopping power.

I'm running duel disks from a later model KZ. I got them to reduce unsprung weight. The heavier disks worked just fine for years. What is wrong with them? :dry:

Not much

A single disk weighs about 2 pounds more than a thinned dual disk. That’s 4 pounds you can shave off rotational mass, which will make the bike stop faster and handle better. That’s a significant amount of weight loss, considering dudes are spending thousands of dollars to shave off a couple pounds by going to magnesium wheels. Will two single disks work? Absolutely. Will they be as good as a dual disks? No. Another option is to upgrade the single disk setup which is what I did on my kz750.
