Another stupid question
22 Nov 2014 16:47
Is the snap ring a necessity for the wheel bearings. It seems as though the bearing would stay put without it. Reason I'm asking its a pain in the a$$

Yes, put them in. They ensure the bearings are seated at the correct depth and that they stay there. Ed

Yes to prevent undue stress on race or bearings.

Just curious. What's the difficulty? No the snap ring pliers?

I got a cheep assortment at OR for $15. I once used a pair of sizzors and used small screw drivers, even ground needle nose pliers to work. Not worth it unless it's the only time. I can't tell you how many tools I've lost to tool thieves over the years. I have a special place in my heart just for them.

Like anything that's been in there for a long time. A few taps with a hammer and screw driver the get it loose or with Phillips screws a hand impact. Steel and aluminum don't like each other or maybe too much, that's why they seize.

25 Nov 2014 06:56That's the risk of buying cheap tools. Sometimes they work fine, sometimes not.Lazyman06 wrote: Bought some harbor freight snap ring pliers and the tit broke the first time i used them.
Try an auto parts store. autozone's look the same as the HF pliers. I use a Lisle set from o-reilly.
