Time for Brake Pads for 77' KZ1000A. What are you Guys using to upgrade the stopping power. I see there are non-sintered organic kevlar, carbon pads advertised? What ever that means? Not sure what to choose?

I've been running the EBC Double Sintered Pads. I like them, great stopping power, quite aggressive.

Does anyone know the difference between sintered and non-sintered brake pads? Don't want anything that's going to chew up the rotors. Any other suggestions?

Dual discs are the best upgrade for these bikes. :)

Sintered brake pads have metal (usually mostly copper) in the blend of the compound. They are harder on stainless rotors. The advantage to sintered pads is longer life and better heat dispersion. Organic compounds are made out of a multitude of different things but most modern pads use some sort of kevlar/resin blend. They are much gentler on rotors, but have a shorter life.

Its really a matter of personal preference. I have found that sintered pads tend to be "grabby" and that i don't have very good feedback of what the wheel is doing under hard braking. They tend to be slow at first then very aggressive. I prefer the Ferodo platinum (organic) pads. Great feedback through the wheel and its very linear, no surprises. I really want to get some iron rotors to go with these pads.

Ferodo and EBC have online catalogs.

I have Ferodo Platinum pads in one of my bikes and like them.

Sintered pads will tear up the rotors, but they stop well.

KZ1000A front pads, Ferodo #FDB132. I bought them from Mike over at vintagebrake.com He is extremely helpful and knowledgeable about brake systems and the like. I picked his brain for over a half hour about a custom brake system i am putting together. lots of good info and tips on his site as well.

I've installed EBC HH pads on my 750, my 1100, and my brother's V-Rod. They have a ferocious bite, very aggressive stopping power!

Other considerations --

Have found that the softer organic non-metallic shorter-life pads provide adequate braking performance with less tendency to squeal during brake application. And that cost of more frequent replacement of the softer pads is offset by expense saved toward disc maintenance.

A sometimes overlooked advantage of single disc is less unsprung weight for the front end.

Where stopping power of a single front disc is enough to squall the tire on a dry paved road, the addition of a second disc may not decrease the stopping distance in ordinary riding.
For racing, dual discs should be less affected by heat build-up.
