Re: 630 to 530 chain and sprockets on 1980 kz750
25 Nov 2024 17:02 - 25 Nov 2024 17:04The stock 630 chain on your bike (1980 KZ750H) is 84 links long.So installed my 16t front and 38t rear for my 530 conversion. I have the chain which current has to many links. Does anyone know how many links I need for my setup? I obviously don'ty want to mis calculate and take to many out.
Each 630 link is 6/8" long, so 63" overall length.
530 chains are 5/8" between links. So 63" / (5/8 ) = 100.8 links. So, that means that either 100 or 102 links are needed.
Since you already have the parts, I suggest installing the sprockets, push the rear wheel forward as much as possible, lay the chain over the sprockets, then mark the cut spot. It should fall in this 100-102 range.

Re: 630 to 530 chain and sprockets on 1980 kz750
25 Nov 2024 17:15 - 25 Nov 2024 17:17Always have the answers Ness!! Thank you!! I will likely do 100 links which "should" provide for adjustment for chain stretch. Is that thinking correct? The stock 630 chain on your bike (1980 KZ750H) is 84 links long.So installed my 16t front and 38t rear for my 530 conversion. I have the chain which current has to many links. Does anyone know how many links I need for my setup? I obviously don'ty want to mis calculate and take to many out.

Also, since I have a 116 link chain I will need to remove 17 links in order to allow for the master link correct?

Measure, don't assume. 102 links is safer than cutting to 100. You can always go shorter, but longer is much more difficult.

Re: 630 to 530 chain and sprockets on 1980 kz750
26 Nov 2024 09:04 - 26 Nov 2024 09:06Thanks Wook. Calculator helped as well. I ended up borking my chain regardless. I took one to many links out of my xring chain making it 98 links and not 100. I was going to add links back, but too much of a pain to try and get the orings back in between the links. I clearly can't count as I counted the links at least 4 times before breaking and still messed it up. Live and learn. It was a JT chain and not a EK, RK, or DID so I wasn't out a ton. Live and learn. I have another chain in route so should be all good. For future reference the below link has a chain and sprocket calculator

All better. Got the replacement chain. Cut it to 100 links this time and it went on like a glove. Now just need to adjust the slack.
