Front Tire movement / camber

I've just put the front wheel on my 83 KZ550H. This bike sat for 10 years and was given to me with a lot of parts off, including the front wheel was off the bike. I've put it together as per the schematics, and tightened the axle nut to specified torque. The first time I put it together, I didn't line the speedometer housing properly, but figured that out (I hope).

But the wheel has a bit of play in it...probably a quarter inch or so. This can't be normal...is it?? If not, any ideas???

Thanks

Play in which direction?
Side to side on the axle?
Or is it tilting sideways compared to the forks?
Pics would help.

I grab the top of the tire and move it sideways....sorry I don't have a lot of experience with bikes so I'm not sure what else I can tell you...I will post pics a little later if it helps. I don't have the 'pinch bolt or screw' - so I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

Thanks

Not normal - don't ride it like that as is may be dangerous. Can you tell if the axle moves when you move the tire sideways or is the axle stationary and the tire/wheel twisting on the axle? Ed

looks to me like the axle is stationary but the wheel moves...I can see the hub moving while the speedometer housing stays still....and the brake disk is certainly moving against the calipers.

Bottom pic doesn't look right.
I'm think maybe bearings.
I don't have a 550 but I have 750 and 440 bikes.
And some of them have a leading axle forks also,
so they should be the same basic design.
I'll look tomorrow and compare them with your pic.

I think I would remove the front wheel from the bike, put the axle through the bearings, and see if there is any wobble between the axle and bearings. If there is any detectable wobble the bearings should be replaced. Ed

The missing pinch bolt wouldn't make a difference would it. Don't have that part.

I'm going to take the axle off again and see if I'm missing something.

Thanks ed...I'll do that tonight

Was really hoping to take this bike on its maiden ride this weekend.

If the pinch bolt is missing is it possible the axle is moving up and down in the fork leg when you twist the tire? Also, I would not ride the bike with that pinch bolt out. Ed
