Wheel Lace and True - How Difficult? Have it done?

So I guess the question that is still unanswered is whether or not the centerline if the hub (represented in red) normally is in the same plane as the centerline of the rim (represented in black) as shown below in 1st diagram, or if it is normal for the two centerlines to be in different planes as in 2nd diagram? Ed

It's called dish or offset.

It's common that the rear hub NOT be on center with the rim. Every one I've seen/built has more room on the chain side. You can adjust this on a complete wheel. With the wheel mounted in the swingarm, loosen the drive side spokes and tighten the brake side spokes alternately. The rim will gradually move to the brake side.

You don't need a "truing stand" to build wheels. My stand is made up from 2x3's. I do the final truing on the bike with a pointer taped to the fork or swingarm.

When you build a wheel, tighten the spokes equally by counting threads. First check radial (up/down) movement, then dial in the radial (left/right) movement.

Before you take a wheel apart, check for offset.

Haven't had time for measurements but I did see in another thread here that the stamped information on a rim should always be on the right. Think there's any truth to that?? If so, they laced my wheel incorrectly.

I finally got around to measuring my rim offset compared to the stock rim. The rim is shifted about 1/4" toward the RH (brake) side. This is actually pretty good because it gives me more chain clearance for a wider tire. I centered the rim/tire in the swingarm, not the hub.

I'd like to do the front rim now, so I have another question. Will any 40 spoke rim lace up to the stock KZ front hub? I'll post of picture of the specific one I'm wondering about. It's a 2.5x19 aluminum rim. I have a spare hub and rotors so I'd like to get the correct SS spokes and lace it up. This one is supposedly for a Hardley but will it work??
