1981 KZ1000 CSR M1 - Front Sprocket Removal

Hello KZ Community,

I am in the process of changing out my front and rear sprockets and replacing the chain with new factory spec hardware (630 chain, same no. teeth sprockets, etc.) And I am having difficulty getting the front sprocket because the sprocket nut has been rounded pretty badly so using a socket is all but impossible. BUT! I see on the face of the sprocket nut is a notch that stretches across the entire face of the nut. Attached I have a picture of a "Bar-Tool" that comes in the factory tool kit. If I bought just this tool (for 7 bucks) is it the one that is supposed to be used to remove the front sprocket nut. Later tonight I will post a picture of the nut for clarification if needed.
Thanks in advance for the help,
Ryan

Can you get an impact socket on there and spin it off? B)

I've broke one loose with a hammer and chisel before when the nut was in bad shape.

Wireman,

My sprocket nut is pretty well rounded and didn't want to make it litterally perfectly round with a slipping impact wrench. I think I'm going to Autozone to see if I can rent a simple tool like the "Bar-tool" in the picture I attached. I'll let you guys know how this is coming along.

Using a chisel and hammer is a good idea, z1wiz, I've done that myself. I can't remember what size that nut is but try to force, wedge or "gently " hammer a socket of a different size onto the nut. Say use a 3/4" on the nut that should be 16 mm. then use a breaker bar to try to loosen. You may need a length of pipe as an extension to the breaker bar for increased leverage. And a friend to help steady the bike.
Good Luck,
Joe

Joe,
Thanks for the tip on using a chisel and hammer but I'm not sure exactly how to go about using a chisel and hammer. But does anybody know if that tool I mentioned would be normally used to take the sprocket nut off? I'm thinking of just buying that "Bar-Tool" just to make sure the job is done correctly. If its even the right tool. I can't find sh!t at my local auto-parts stores for something that could work for this job. Attached is a picture of my sprocket nut that I'm trying to get ANY torque on without using a socket or impact wrench. I really would just like to use the "channel" on top of the nut.

I'm thinking about this idea. Any thoughts?

Am thinking that the item being referred to as a "Bar-Tool" is a short extension to fit over and add slight leverage to an end wrench or maybe a shock adjuster tool.

A much longer breaker-bar may be needed to loosen the counter shaft sprocket nut, which is sometimes notoriously tight and difficult to break loose.

If the nut is already sufficiently damaged to prevent gaining a hold with a socket for removal (with a breaker bar or air hammer), it's likely too damaged for adequate tightening when later reinstalling the sprocket.

Heat from a butane torch might help loosen the nut, if red lock-tite was used when assembled.

A hammer and a steel cold chisel may be used by allowing the chisel point to dig into edge of the nut while pounding on the chisel with the hammer.

Might also use a cut-off wheel or Dremel tool to carefully slice into the nut.

In any event, wear eye protection.

Here's one option for holding the sprocket in position while attempting to turn the nut.

Good Fortune! :)

Using a hammer and chisel to loosen a rounded off nut isn't very hard to do. Don't worry about damaging the nut as you would want to replace the rounded off one with a new one anyway. Is it a nut or a bolt on that model?

I think I might try to use my cold chisel and hammer, I'm just very nervous about damaging something while hammering away with a chisel trying to break the nut loose. I would prefer to just torque it with that kit I found from craftsman. But I will try both and see which works first.

And on a side not. I need to determine which is the correct new sprocket nut. I have a attached a photo of both dimensions. One is 10x35 and the other is 10x39. Which one do I need? I'm trying to order all my parts while gradually working on getting the sprocket nut off.

So it is a bolt, I misunderstood what you were saying. Another option if you have a welder, is to hold a much larger nut that fits completely over the bolt head in place and weld inside the nut to the bolt. Now you can easily put a socket on the nut and hit it with the impact to remove. We do this at work on rounded off bolt heads and worn out socket head cap screws.

The length of the bolt depends on your engine number.

you can weld a old socket to the nut and use a impact gun....would make quick work of it.....little rough on socket though.

would be down towards the bottom of my list of things to try, sounds like your getting close to bottom.....
