Which way press out triple tree stem ? (KZ 1100 ST
02 Jan 2013 20:30
Hi all,
I know you guys know this. Which way do I press out the triple tree stem ?
Please refer to up or down according to the arrows on the pic.
The triple tree is from a KZ 1100 ST -81. Tried both sides with 10.000 kg / 10 ton pressure but nothing happened. I have drilled out the pin.
For further info on my build please see:

it pushes out the bottom, you need to use some heat.
generally speaking,
if the tree is aluminum you will have to push it out the bottom.
i put a few tons of pressure on them and then sit there and warm it up with a propane torch and wait for the big POP  ,don't be sittin there chewin on your tongue(cause you will jump and bite it off).
if it is welded in and you machine the weld off you will have to push it out the top, usually  .
hope this helps,

Thanx Leon,
Just to be sure, the stem should be pressed down through the lower crown according to my pic ?
The full lenght will stem will pass through the lower crown ?
This also means that the lower bearing will slide out of the stem as well.
Correct ?

correct.
you need to use the heat tho.
that bearings is making it take more pressure to let go.
as it is oriented on the bike( and in your diagram
),press it down

you sir would be mistaken

think about it,
if it was up when you tightened it up with the nuts on top they would pull it through the lower triple.
there is a snap ring on the bottom that keeps you from being able to pull it through the triple.
heres a pic of the frontend i converted for boostable.
some have steps on the bottom, but the idea is to clamp the upper and lower together with the stem.
so you don't wanna be able to push a stem up through the top.
when stems are welded or brazed in alot of times they will be undersized where they pass into the triple creating a step that sets down on the triple and then the weld on the bottom locks it all together.
so then you machine the weld off and push it out the top.
hope this clears up any confusion.
i have done several dozen frontend conversions and can cover you up with pics if need be to help clear anything up.

I can confirm that Mr. Leon is right !
(not that I didn´t belive you..)
Finally got mine out, but without any heat since I couldn´t get hold of any.
So with the confidence that I was pressing in the right direction I cranked the press up to 13-14 tons....and then shit myself when I heard it pop
Looked like I didn´t drill out the last millimeters of the pin.
But anyway, it´s out and I´m happy !
Thanx again Leon, couldn´t have done it without you
Evidence:
The stem from the Yamaha R1 -98-00 came out the same way...but at a wimpy 3 tons

One more thing Leon..
What would you recommend when swapping the stems ?
Go for a sleev and use the same stem or manufacture a new stem ?
The kz1100 stem is 28,2 mm and the R1 is 30,5 mm.
A sleev would only be 1,15 mm thick....

as long as your kz stem is straight,re-use it.
use your r1 stem for your sleeve and bore the id to be a press fit on the kz stem.don't forget the counterbore for the snap ring to lock into.
that is the first time i have seen a stem pinned.
hope this helps,

Thanx Leon,
But the wall thickness off the R1-stem after bore will be only 1,15 mm thick. (0,046 ")
Feels a bit to thin. :S
PS. The pin might be a Swedish/European thing...you know, they make up all kinds of regulations since we are so special over here
