wheel bearing
13 Oct 2012 17:00 - 13 Oct 2012 17:01
well i did the wheel bearings on my kz750h. I forgot the dust cover and the cir-clips. it is doing so much better, as the old bearings were burnt up. I will have to go back and put the clips and dust cover on there although i am not sure if i even need the clips, because i put red thread-locker on the outside of the bearings. Also the calipers were sticking and needed to be cleaned. As i was hammering the bearings in using the axle i noticed one of them didn't spin freely after i installed it, it looks straight in there. Anyways it rides nicely..........also have a size 14 front sprocket to go on there, i just haven't gotten to it today.

If you hammered on inside bearing race then you just destroyed that bearing. Always hammer on the outer bearing race. If you use the inner one all the force goes directly to the bearings and ruins them. They might feel OK for now but in a short amount of time they will start to go bad. That would also explain why one did not spin freely after install.

You can probably find a bearing driver set on ebbaayy. I got mine there -SummitRacing, I think.
The factory manual says to apply grease to the bearings prior to installation.
Apply grease, tap tap tap to get them started, then drive them in.
Change the oil & filter. Shell Rotella-T 15W-40 in the white bottle is good & inexpensive.

This is easy. If you don't know when the oil was last changed it is over due. Make sure whatever oil you use has the designation "JASO-MA" on the bottle. Otherwise you may be replacing a clutch soon. JASO-MA is the standard for motorcycles that use wet clutches (like your KZ). Ed

yeah i actually changed the oil about 50 miles ago i just am not sure if it has 122222.2 miles or what, it is pretty old, another thing is i didn't find the spring under the oil filter and it was last changed in november so it has been straight non filtered oil since then. there is a leak under the clutch cover wondering about motor honey but i know i should get some of the mc specified additive.

That is not what he meant by using grease. You grease the outer race so the bearing will go in a little easier. If I was you I would take the the bearings you just put in there and replace them again. The last thing you want when riding at 75mph is to have a wheel bearing lock up on you.
