A 16 / 40 with a 530 chain is equivalent to a 13 / 33 with a 630 chain.
On my '82 KZ650, a 14 tooth front sprocket is as large as will fit, when using a 630 chain. Stock gearing on my bike was 13 / 33.
The 1000 motors apparently have a little more room around the countershaft sprocket.
I recommend changing to a 13 tooth front; adjusting the chain slack and see how you like it.

I have been looking at the gearing commander site and really enjoying it. I am running a 16 in rear (77.5 circumference) with a 15/33 combo. It is not bad but I would like more low end grunt. Stock Z1 gearing with stock tire puts you at 80mph @5100 rpm 15/35 and 14/33 with current tire put me at 75mph @ 5100. A 14/35 puts me at 71 at 5100. (630 chain )
I dont do long distance rides with this. 2oo miles in a day would be max. I do like to take it out and crank on it good though. What is a safe cruising rpm for these motors?
