Good idea. The spring not only holds the kickstand up, it also holds it in the down position. With a spring that weak or streched out, your bike could easily topple over, and that ain't pretty.

Something about that picture has bugged me. Now I think I know what it is: I think that's the wrong kickstand.

I'll tell you this, it sure is not like the ones I have on my '78s, and I don't know if (and I doubt) they changed between the '76 and '78....

I'll second Biquetoast's obeservation. That, not the stand I have on my '78. Here in central Ohio I know Rice Paddy or Doc's should have at least a dozen or so lying around. You might try them to see if you can get the whole assembly.

I just emailed those guys to see if they have it. I looked up the part on a part list and you are right it does not look correct.
I just bought the bike so you never now what people might have put on a thirty year old bike.
