Steve,
Thats alot of work to end-up with damper rod forks. I am sure the er parts will work better then the stock 650 parts, but cartrage forks are lightyears ahead of damper rod units!

I'm using a '06 GSXR1000 front end on my bike, the twist being I purchased custom triple's from another member here that alows closer to stock ride hight and factory fork offset for OEM turning radius. The stem is custom and uses the factory bearings for a direct swap. Definitely NOT the least expensive route, but it was one of the few splurges I allowed myself for this build.

I'm not looking mega handling out of the 650, just some good looks. I have a 2007 ZX6R race bike if i want to get some kicks.

I just took a look at the forks, brakes and wheels on the new ER6 and they are nice. Are you going to try for a ER6/Ninja 650 rear wheel? That would look good on an older twin! I have a pair of 76-80 KZ750 twin engines so I'm always looking for a complete bike and ideas.
Good luck with your project, please post photos as you work.

I was going to try to fit the ER6 Swingarm as well & weld lugs on for shock mounts, it was going to have to go in upside down as well because of the way the ER6 shock mounts on but then the chain fouls where a brace support is . I think i'll try a ZRX swingarm, i've been told 1 is an easier modded fit than the other but i don't know if its the 1100 or 1200.

Re: What front end did you use?

I just realized that I never posted in this thread. I used a 1995 GSXR750 fork. It sits at 28 1/2" laden from the centerline of the axle to the top of the fork tube with a full tank of gas. I have changed the springs and oil to the correct rate considering the load and intended use for the bike.
All together, I calculate that I have lost 3" of ride height due to the shorter forks and smaller diameter tire. The bike is set up for spirited riding, but not ridiculously fast. I tend to ride like I pay a mortgage if you know what I mean. I can scrape the header collector on a quick right hand turn. It's in the plans to increase the ride height in the near future, but I can say that the bike handles very confidently up to the point where you start making sparks with the header. Very predictable and steady even to triple digit speeds. I'm very happy with the conversion.

Testarossa,
I very much enjoyed reading through your build, your bike is really awesome!!
I am collecting parts for a build myself and am getting as much info on everything I can as I have never done this before. My chosen steed is a 77 KZ 1000. So far I have a frame, bottom end of a motor that I am tearing apart, set of '91 Suzuki GSX 17" wheels, tank, and a set of '02 ZX9R forks. They are regular cartridge style 46mm diameter and look good.
My question is this - I am worried about ride height as I will be losing about 3 or more inches, I would like to find out if anyone knows if/how forks can be lengthened in any way. Choppers use super long extended forks so there must be a way. You have mentioned you will be addressing the ride height, what are you thinking might work?
New to this forum and very appreciative of any ideas or advice,

A custom dropped top triple clamp is the easiest way. I gained quite a bit by going this route. Check out the picture porsche914 put up, you can see the Gullwing top clamp. He had custom upper/lower clamps made...I only got an upper.
