KZ900 LTD swapping out dual disc to single disc

I just picked up a 1976 KZ900 LTD. It has the front mag wheel with dual discs. I'm going to change the front and back wheels to spokes and get this bike looking like a standard (not LTD).

I have a front disc sitting around somewhere, an undrilled one off a '78 KZ1000A I believe. After I pickup a spoke front wheel, I'd like to use that undrilled disc, then remove a caliper from the front end.

How to seal off the unused second brake line hole at the junction on the lower triple clamp? Can I just put a bolt in there with some teflon tape?

The master cylinder is one of those with the round screw top, not the trapezoidal type.

Thanks, Mike

The 76 900's dual disks were thinner. I think 6mm as opposed to 8mm. (I think those were the thicknesses)

Take it from me cuz I found

I'm doing the opposite, single disc to dual disc- you're saying there are two different brake rotor (and caliper) widths?

I'm not sure about the calipers but there are two different rotor widths. The single is quite a bit thicker and heavier. It was done to reduce unsprung weight. (reduces gyroscopic effect also) + for Roy that IS a rare bike and keep the original parts is good advice. Fact is I would not change it if it is original. But that's me.

I did some checking and this is not the stock front end. These discs have the drilled hole pattern that Kawasaki started using in 1979, I believe.

The discs on the bike measure 11.5 inches diameter and 6mm thick. The disc sitting in my backyard (of a 1978 KZ1000A) has the same diameter and is about 8mm thick.

Maybe I'll just keep the discs and calipers that are on the bike and swap them out to the spoke front wheel (hope they fit). Either that or take the right disc off and run it with the left disc and get a single line junction or run a one piece braided line.

If I run a one piece braided line I'll need a brake light switch. Z1 Enterprises has a banjo that works for dual lines at the master cylinder, I e-mailed and asked if they have a one-line banjo with the brake light switch.

The lowest price I see today for a single line splitter including brake switch is $33 plus $7 postage. Guess I'll keep watching.

Start a thread under the Parts Wanted category. I'm sure quite a few old guys around here have single disc splitters lying around. B)
