KZ900 with too-small front axle was created by bangshift440rt
5 or six years ago I bought a set of mag wheels for my 1976 kz900. The guy told me they would fit, but after being on the road working I finally decided to assemble the bike last week. Turns out the front axle fits loosely in the forks, the disks (2) are too small and with 6 bolts, and the rear wheel has one large 4 bolt disc. Does anybody know what exactly it is that I purchased? :pinch: Is there some type of collar or shims I can use on the front or is it not worth my time? If anybody is interested in trading me these wheels for a set of normal single disc front and rear drum wheels let me know because my old ones are long gone! the sizes are 19 front and 18 rear.

Only two bikes used six bolt front wheels. One of them is the KZ1300 and the other was the KZ1000ST. If it is a 19" front than it is from the 1000ST. You will have a hard time making that work without some modifications. You require wheels from 77-78 LTD bikes to be able to make them fit with out mods.

74 Z1-A stock
76 KZ-900 Totaly stock vice MAC pipe
77 KZ-1000A stock
78 Z1-R 100%MINT 500 original Mi.
78 Z1-R Yoshi 1103 kit stage 1 cams Yoshi pipe. Etc
79 KZ-1300 (1400)
80 KZ-1300
81 Scratch built GPz1150R
82 KZ1000

could be a z1 axle/wheel ,try using the wheel bearings from your existing front wheel and axle to install it
got a picture?

Thank you for the useful info! So next, who here needs a kz1000st front wheel and the mystery rear wheel I have? I wanted to go triple disc, but with my engine being back together and the warm weather coming up I just want to finish it and ride. Does anybody have the original style disc/drum wheels they would like to sell or trade? Doesn't matter to me if they are mag or spokes.

Wireman, like a fool, I decided to trade the original wheels off for some other random part when I got these ones. The discs on this front rim are much thinner and smaller in diameter than the original kz900 disc. Also, the rear disc looks suspiciously like a 900 front disc that has been drilled.

post a picture, dual disc rotors are thinner than singles .
z1s came with 6 bolt brake rotors as did h1's and 2s and a differant style of front axle that didnt use nuts on end of axle like kz bikes .
post a picture of the wheels

The axle on this wheel seems to have a nut on both sides, but very very thin and with a large od compared to a normal nut. I tried to turn them tighter with much resistance. I can't get a picture right now, my SD card slot decided to fail a few weeks ago.

here cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Z1-KZ900-KZ1000-...fPartsQ5fAccessories looks identical to this but spins freely after clamped in the forks, enough for the wheel to wobble excessively. The caps gap is tightened much further than is shown in the repair manual. i am using the stock forks that came with my bike. place for a caliper on both forks, front side, but came with one on the left side from the factory.
