Z1 top triple tree swap was created by Buckeye73z1
When I mounted my guages, I noticed they were not correct for a Z1 (140mph speedo). After research, I think I have early KZ650 guages, mounted to my stock Z1 guage mount. They don't fit well and the "bullets" on the back don't fit well on them due to the fact they are in the wrong bracket. Given the rarity and $$$ of Z1 guages and the fact my bike is not original, I'm thinking of swapping to the KZ-style gauges with studs that go from top to bottom on the top triple tree. I would need to swap to the newer KZ-style top triple tree to do this. Does anyone know if the top tree from a KZ (i.e. '77 KZ1000) will match up to my Z1 forks and neck without modification? If so, this should be pretty easy to swap.

Yes it will! As long as your guage bracket has the 4 rubber dampners on the 2 studs that will go through the 2 holes on the KZ style top tree.
The tree itself will bolt on same.
Goog luck

Thank you! I suppose I complicated/diluted the question with the guage info. I should've just asked if the top trees were interchangeable between Z1 and KZ900/1000 models. This will make getting a "clean" looking guage cluster much easier and much more cost effective than modifying my current mess. The P/O of my bike was a total hack. Thanks again.

To give you an idea of how bad of a hack, I wondered why I couldn't locate my tach drive. I found out it was because he had stuffed putty into the hole on the head and then used a combination of tin foil/JB Weld/Scrap metal and crappy black paint to camoflauge his hackery. Jackass could've atleast given me the worm gear

I have this one that I ground out a KZ top bracket. ported it like a old prostock cyl head LOL.
I wanted a low tucked in look to match the lowrider, dragbike look.
Cut the studs off of the guage bracket, milled it flat, the welded a flat plate on, which I welded both pieces together. Solid mount, this bike ain't going on any long rides. Going to the local cruise night or bar

That is really clean looking. I like it. My bike is lowered/strutted/stretched as well, but my main goal is to get it done right and get it back on the road by spring. From there, I'll start modding more things and working on perfecting it. Right now, it's just trying to un-do all of the "stupid" that the P/O did to it.

Do you still have the Z1 tree? If so, what is the center bore on it? I could pull mine off later and measure, but if you know right off hand or have one that is easily measurable, that would make my life easier. B)
