I am almost 100% sure a 180 will physically fit in the gs arm, you for sure need an offset sprocket.

Does any one have an opinion on swapping a 1000 disc wheel out form a 900 drum? is stopping power going to be reduced enough to matter. i just dont wanna deal with the master cylinder and all the crap that can go wrong with a disc setup. also are the hubs the same width, would i need any special spacer or would me 1000 ones work?

WOW!
You know at first I thought no way a 180 will fit, so as I have a GS1000 in the garage that happens to have a 180 rear mod in progress and also the original swing arm, hence the 2 photos (blue swing arm is the GS1000 and the 180 rear alloy swing arm is in the black GS1000 frame…photo explained) I just had to see for myself…

And to my surprise as you can see NO PROBLEM even when you have a brand new chain and the wheel is as far back as possible. To give a rough idea of spacing its about 8-10mm to the tyre so I believe 190 is even possible! ……. The brake bar needs to be adjusted and the chain will definitely rub as its about 15-20mm away from the tyre when it’s a 120 so offsets are needed but to answer if a 180 or 190 will fit……………………

YES!

How big a tire can you fit in a GS1100 swingarm? I have heard the biggest is a 160mm and I've also heard the a 180 or 190mm tire will fit. Anyone know for sure?

You heard bogus info. The widest tire that you can fit into a stock GS1100 swingarm is 140mm .

Most of the GS modification guys swap to early GSX-R swingarm and 18" or 17" GSX-R wheels and add a shim to offset the countershaft sprocket, then I believe you are ok up to 160-170mm .

I am confused. The previous photo shows a 180 in there. What am I missing?

Let me further clarify, my previous comment was based upon a completely stock GS1100, no doubt a wider tire will fit, but you need extensive mods to get there...

I had an '82 GS1100E and I know for a fact, there was only about 5/16" of a gap between the tire and the chain with a 140mm tire...

old thread i know, but i got my spacers cut and the swingarm in solved my rear master cylinder linkage problem. I cut the 3 spot welds on the spacer that was tacked onto the back of the brake pedal assembly where the clevis bolts, and all i did was weld the spacer back on the other side of the tab it was welded to and it got me enough clearance to keep the 2 from rubbing. with much longer shocks, im running a stock length shocks, the end of the bolt through the clevis might have some clearance issues doing it this way when the pedal is the whole way down because this gave me just enough room all the way around. just wanted to put this in here in case someone uses the search function to look for ideas on the subject.
