Chain Oil Pump

I just want to be sure about this. It appears that the chain oil pump has been removed from previous years of the Z1 and that by not reinstalling a pump into the empty space there will be no problems. Assuming that I lube the chain regularily as I would for any other chain driven bike.

One of the first things people took of the original Z1's, they really didn't work and just made a mess. Chain technology wasn't up to the Z1 horsepower and Kawasaki thought a well lubed chain might last longer.The first Z's came with a sticker under the seat that entitled you to a new Enuma chain at 3000 miles iirc.

For peace of mind, would fashion a cover to bolt over the chain pump drive hole, to keep any crud from getting inside.

thanks guys. One more question though.. if this engine has the chain oil pump.. I was told that's for 74 or older bikes. This is supposed to be a '76 KZ900A4 to the best of my knowledge. Is there something i'm missing?

What's the engine i.d. number?

Thinking a 1974 Z1 engine (complete with its 1974 28mm Mikuni carbs) has been installed in the 1976 bike. For whatever reason.

Maybe its a hopped-up 1974 engine.

Likely not a 1973, because oem 1973 engine was painted black.

Likely not a 1975, because oem 1975 engine didn't have chain-oiler.

1974 Z1 had unpainted engine and chain-oiler.

Engine i.d. number should be helpful. The number is located on a flat surface near the oil filler cap.

If the engine i.d. number has been obliterated, well . . . [you know].

And yes it is a hopped up engine.. not sure what the bore is... i'm hoping to talk to the builder when I get a chance.

where did you find these vin details? So you're saying this is actually a '73.. why does the vin have six digits on the bike instead of the 5 shown.

My KZ900 never had the oiler. They'd been eliminated in 74 or 75.

May ignore year of engine as far as doing what has to be done to get it running.

Z1 and KZ900 engines were basically the same.

Ramifications of hop-up would be same regardless of whether 73, 74, 75 or 76 900 engine.

What are questions regarding the hop-up?

My swag would be 4>1 plus overbore and perhaps a cam, which were common popular hop-ups at time. Guessing not much more, in view of the 28mm Mikunis being retained. As typically the next step would have been addition of 29mm smoothbores.
