Front / Drive Sprocket not coming loose
07 Jul 2010 18:57
Hey all,
I'm trying to change my front / drive sprocket and I can't get it loose. I read the manual and it all seems extremely standard, but i can't even get it to budge. I do have to loosen this nut to the Left, correct?
I tried a pipe extender on my wrench too and no luck...
Is there a trick to this i'm missing?

Yes, is should be turned to the left (counterclockwise) to loosen. Be sure to bend the locking washer (if it still has one) so it doesn't interfere with the nut turning. If the engine is still in the frame you can use the homemade tool in the link below and an impact wrench and it will come loose.

the motor is still in the frame but I took the chain off for the most part. the back wheel is off cause i changed that sprocket so i've been locking up the chain with a screw driver so the front sprocket won't turn (instead of using the back brake like the manual said).

Yes, i bent the lock washer flat so it shouldn't be interfering. I'll check out that tool. thanks.

An impact gun is the only way if the nut is tight...which it is most times.

Ok, I tried the homemade tool for this and it broke the bolts that i put through the chain to keep it from moving before that fuckin nut came loose. aaarrrrggggggggg
so far i've tried a pipe extender on the end of my ratchet, PB Blaster, light taps with a hammer to get it to loosen, banging the handle of my ratchet with a hammer, and general 93 degree weather wrenching.
any other ideas short of buying more expensive tools?
i'll look into an impact driver and see if anyone has a impact gun...

p.s.....location is everything...if you are in plummens neck of the woods...do not watse money on imported beer....there,,, a warm king cobra 40 oz will bring the needed help.....
i think the p.b blaster and an air rachett with the compressor at 120 and a qucik set of bursts///knocks//blasts pulls off the really really bad ones...sucks to buy a special socket and all but only a hard air sockett will work...the others just crack and crumble under the demand,......or drive to a service station that you've checked to have said implements.,.. with a twelve pack of st paully girl and remove the cover ect on the side of the shop and present the beer and a request......

That's definitely affordable, but i don't have a compressor.... which is needed for this, right?

I wouldn't put a extension pipe on any ratchet. It's a good way to break one. Use a breaker bar. Besides, the handle is usually longer. Put the cheater pipe over that handle. I used a old extended fork tube from a BSA (about 2.5') over my 1/2" breaker bar to break my cs nut loose. I heard a crack and wasn't sure if it was the bar or socket breaking. It was the nut loosening fortunately. Yeah you will work up a sweat doing it. Try a tool rental place for an impact.
