Rivet chain install was created by gte105u
Ok, so I am 90% done with my first chain/sprocket replacement and I am stuck. Please, please, oh please help me finish. After making improvised stands, fumbling around on getting sprocket cover off, etc... I got the sprockets replaced. I fed the chain through, got the master link (with rings) in. As I try to put the other side of the master link on, it does not want to go.

So here is the question, what am I doing wrong? How do you get the flat part of the link on far enough to flare the rivet? I am completely stuck. I tried to force it on using pliers but no go. Below is a pic, please help me finish this because I am so very close.

A small to medium sized "C" clamp will help a lot. Carefully squeeze the parts together, avoid bending of the plates if possible.

I use a large pair of "Vise Grips" when replacing my 630 chain. 1/4" drive sockets can be used when force is needed on parts sticking through the plates later on.

In your picture, what are those flat shinny pieces of metal? The chain should only have the figure 8 shaped pieces, do you have the clip? It should go on with the solid end in direction of travel, like an arrow pointing so it doesn't hit against something and pop off.

Those are the spacers for the rivet master link. This is not the kind that has the clip, though I am wondering if I somehow got the wrong master link for a 520 instead (this is a 530 chain). Anyone in the know, does everything look right and I just need to put a clamp on it? I have a 2" c-clamp sitting on the top of my tool box I could break out. Thanks for the help.

I'm with Motor Head on this one, something just not right with that master clip, rivet or C clip, just doesn't seem right...

Maybe it's me....

That square piece does,nt look right. Do you have a tool for the rivet, This is one of the tasks that patience pays off.

Rivot type, still can't see those plate things on any chain. Look at the other links, rivoting should match them exactly.

"Look at the other links, riveting should match them exactly."... Yes indeed... Regardless of chain pitch, O-ring, X-ring you name it... It should be a rounded end clip...

Is this what came with your chain or you get this somewhere else?

Those rectangle plates slide in and out from the top. I got the rivet pieces as shown above. The directions the chain come with say to put the rectangles in to be sure not to overtighten on the gaskets. It sounds like from the people who know than I here they are not needed? It may make it easier to force the master link on without those being in the way I just did not want to damage anything. Below is a picture I found elsewhere of someone who did it with the spacers in. I think I just need to be more patient with c-clamp and getting it to push on the master link before riveting.
