KZ440B Front Sprocket Torque Setting

Can anyone tell me what the torque setting is for the nut holding on the front sprocket? My bike is a 1980 KZ440B. Thanks!

a breaker bar with 10' cheater pipe snugs em up nicely B)

Don't really want to overtighten it. I thought 70ft/lbs would be enough but that seemed too easy.

The official torque figure is "as tight as you can wrench it on".
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

if you ever experiance one coming off going down the road youll realize it can never be too tight,and dont forget red locktite ! :laugh:

I think mine is spec'd at 100 ft-lbs, and I also use blue loctite.

Thanks guys. I put on some red loctite and torqued it to 100 ft-lbs.

Got the wheels off and will be replacing the bearings. Anyone know the front and rear axle torque settings off top of their head?

Won't that be PITA to remove the next time you change the sprocket (red loctite needs a lot of heating to be released if i remember)?

ask omr what its like loosen the nut on your sprocket,then picture your wheel locking up at 60mph.
red locktite beats red blood on the ground any day in my book! :laugh:

The Kawis have a splined flat washer that you flatten against one flat of the nut so the nut can't come off. When I changed mine, the nut was loose but held in place by the lock washer.... hence my cleaning it thoroughly and using blue loctite. I don't recommend red unless you want to use a torch to remove it.

Thread Locking Compounds:
Loctite #222MS PURPLE, low strength thread locker
For screws under ¼”.

Loctite #242 BLUE, Medium strength thread locker
For ¼” to ¾” bolts.

Loctite # 262 RED, High strength thread locker permanent
For up to ¾” bolts (can be loosened by 300 F heat).

Loctite #271 RED, High strength thread locker for sealing plugs, nuts and bolts (can be loosened by 300 F heat).

Avoid using any of the thread lockers on plastic fittings as it will quickly "Craze" or crack them.

what happens when the little tab breaks off the washer? :S you find the sprocket and chain balled up inside the housing tearing things up,yes it happens B)
