Hi Guys. My powdercoater has my fork lower tubes to coat and he has a question. He says there is what looks like a teflon coated slide/bushing in the fork tube, and needs to know if it can be baked at 450 degress, since it looks like it might be very difficult to get out.

Did you remove the fork cylinder? (It's held in by a hex socket screw in the botttom of the fork). If not, I would NOT cook that puppy as it includes a fiber ring that makes the forks work. Ed

Oh yeah, I have the damper tube and everything out, this is something thats pressed into the bottom fork leg itself.

its a slider bushing and they are replaceable so you might want to look it up and see if it is still available. it is very simalar in design to a cam bearing in a car. it is what keeps the fork tube from moving around too much in the slider. if it isn't available then you can take it out and reuse if your very carefull.

Teflon melts at 621F but properties degrade above 500F. That's awfully close to your 450. I think that I would try to get it out if possible. Does anyone know if it is really teflon?

usally on the older bikes they are made out of the same materials as plain bearings,newer machines sometime sometimes use a teflon coating on them.

They were never offered as a separate part on the KZ650. If you ruin it you will be looking at replacing the lower fork legsoore trying (in vain) to find just the fork cylinders. In other words, don't cook them. Ed

The red ring in the picture is the critical piece that was never listed as a separate part number (on KZ650's) and may be damaged by heat. Hope this helps.

I'm not talking about that. I have the forks completely disassembled. This is a bushing that was left in the bottom leg after it was disassembled.

those bushings that are in the slider are removeable you just have to be carefull.
