I've taken apart the speedo from a 650 I had as a donor. It takes a lot of patience to pry apart the chrome bezel without damaging it too badly. It takes even more patience to re-crimp it without leaving marks. Also if you want a really flawless job it would take practice on several units. After I had re-crimped it I noticed that it was not square all the way around. Most people wouldn't even notice....

i've taken the tach apart but not the speedo. it's real easy if you use a dremel to cut the chrome ring, and then some jweld and hose clamp to cement it back together.

The old article suggests removing the band around the gauges by levering it up from the underside. I have found that results in too much damage to the band to make it look good after it is put back on, and crimped down. Therefore, I instead took a dremel with a cut-off wheel to the band, and sliced through it, being carefull not to damage the gauge cover. Then I slipped off the band, and did my gauge clean-up. To reinstall, I assembled the cover onto the gauge, slipped the band on, and held it tightly in place with a rubber band. Then I placed a drop of JBweld epoxy onto the gap in the band, and let it dry. (Make sure you mount the gap in the band at an location that will not be readily visible when the gauge is remounted onto the bike.) That has been working well for over a year.

Good Luck! :)

That's a great tip for removing the band!
I've had my speedo apart to evict a Spider, uncrimping the band all the way around.
What a pain in the a$$.

OK-After some testing, I have come up with this very easy way of harmlessly and easily removing the markings on your gage face. This will be a picture presentation so be patient.

First apply my solution to the surface which you want to remove the markings from. The solvent dries very slowly so evaporation is not a factor. Also odor is not a factor. Apply a liberal amount of the solvent to the gage face with a Swab, making sure that there is a pooling of the solvent and allow to sit for about 5 minutes. You may apply more if it starts to dry out on you.

After the five minutes, use the swab and rub the area to loosen any dry spots. This should not take much effort.

Wipe off area with bathroom tissue. This solution is water soluble, so any mess you make can easily be wiped up.
