23 Dec 2009 17:32
I have searched, but I know you guys are a very proud of you rcreations, and pic whores every one. So I propose that those with the monoshock conversion mod done to their bikes should post up and get a good reference for those who want to but haven't yet. One of those fellas is me, the one that wants to but hasn't yet. So I leave it to you masters of the mods, dazzle us!

I like this. I kind of thought of looking into wether or not it was to do this or not. But my main question is if it is possible to do this with a stock swing arm. If not, what bike has a swing arm that will mount right up to my 1980 KZ 650E?

the 2000 to 2004 gsxr 600 and 750 swingarm is a good choice but there is no easy ways to make it work, besides having to fab and weld in the shock mount you will have to have an oversized sleeve machined for the axle as they are going to be different sizes, you will then need to relocate your battery box because the shock mount will be in the way, then a bit of bracing will be needed and ontop of all that you will need an offset sprocket, add that to the cost of a gsxr wheel, tire, break and chain?

I like how almost everyones mounts are different. This is why I had to ask this question.
Mark, is that DOM or HREW/CREW tubing? Old piece of frame?
What thickness steel is everyone using?
What, if any, other considerations were there for the frame (i.e. extra bracing)? If any, where?
Thanks for the input and if there are others, please chime in.

Re: Mono shock mounting

I started with a mono shock so half the work was done for me but i fitted an 05 gsxr 750 swingarm to my gpz. I had to use the swingarm pivot sleeve from the gpz and just slid it into the gsxr sleeve. I can use the original pivot bolt. For the side to side I had to get 4 more spacers that the gsxr already uses. two on each side and that part is done. The trick is to get the geometry right. You have to mount the shock in a way that it is in the same position as it was on the original bike. I.E. the shock angle and height.
