I read a lot on this web sight from many people about custom swing arms, oversized wheels, ETC.ETC. But I have never herd any of these same people talk about aligning the sprockets. After offsetting this, that, and the other, how do you make sure that the two sprockets are in the same plane. Please don't tell me that you do it by eye. I have been doing a lot of research on the web and have found many articles tellng me how important it is that the sprockets are in perfect alignment. How quickly chains and sprockets can be warn out if they are not aligned. How much HP can be lost if they are not aligned. For this reason I started looking at what tools are available, and have found a couple. Unfortunately all these tools help with is rear sprocket angle. this would all be fine when "one" is running a STOCK set up and the sprocket "surface plane" is all taken care of at the factory by the engineers. Here is my point; I am converting to a 530 chain from a 630 chain. when i bought the required parts, the front sprocket is offset by .25" from the stock while obviously the rear sprocket is also thinner than the stock 630 sprocket, offsetting the pair even more. So now, first of all putting the two sprocket planes into parallel is relatively simple, the tools for that adjustment exist, if the marks on the swing arm adjusters are not accurate enough. But, how do you check if they are in the same plane? Also, if they are not, and in my case the front sprocket is too far out, how do you space the rear sprocket farther out to put them in the same plane? Let's start an inteligent discussion about this. Since some of the stuff I have read states that as much as 10% of horse power can be lost in improper sprocket adjustment. If this is true than that 10% is going directly into wearing out the chain and sprockets. Now I have designed and will be building a laser tool to do the measurements, how do I space the rear sprocket out farther????

That is a very nice tool, but I refuse to pay $80 for it. The laser tool I am building will cost me a LOT less. I want to shoot from front to rear, since the front sprocket angle is a given and can not be changed. By putting the tool on the rear sprocket you can not tell if the two are in the same plane if the rear wheel is at a slight angle do to adjustment mark inaccuracies. But, mounting the rear sprocket backwards, since I have the room next to the tire is a good idea that will get me closer. But even that will still leave me about 3/16" out of plane with the front sprocket.

What I would really like to know is how to space the rear sprocket farther out.

i have a spacer on my dymags that i took off ill measure its thickness tomorrow and get back to you if you want it its yours.

as for wheel twisting out of line,

i used a long flat piece of metal and i tried to make sure that the straight edge hit sprockets evenly,

i just went all through this with my bike as i put a gsx-r 02 complete rear end on my bike.

had to switch to 530 sprockets as well,

all becouse i wanted fatter wheels and tyres.

The spacer I require would have to have the 80mm center hole. I am surprised that there is no company that makes something like .5mm shims that could be stacked to do this task.

I just measured my offset "exactly and it is .2385" (6.06mm) if I use my rear sprocket properly. And, I just realized that I can not flip my rear sprocket backwards, because that will ADD .1145" (2.91mm) and not subtract it. If I install a 1/4" spacer under the rear sprocket I will be off only by .0115" (.3mm) that would be completely acceptable. Even 1mm at that distance would be fine.

Post has been edited to contain both English and Metric systems. Since you English do not understand the English system any more. Here are a couple of pictures to show the sprocket I WILL be using on the left and the proper height sprocket on the right.
