Rear wheel turns in neutral was created by chrispysaki
I had my bike on its center stand today while it was in neutral, and when I turned the throttle the rear wheel would turn - not very hard or fast, but the more I turned the throttle the faster the wheel turned. Is this normal, or does it mean there's something wrong with the clutch?

It's normal.

Even with the bike in neutral, none of the gears are locked onto the output shaft, but they're all still spinning around it. There's a little friction in the bearings and whatnot and it's enough to cause the wheel to spin. No biggie.

Transmission is soaked in oil, and even though there are no gear making contact, shaft movement is transmitted thru the oil to other shafts; as in an auto tranny torque converter. Oil acts as fluid coupler. Against no resistance, the wheel moves. This is a good sign.

Oil is created by microorganisms millions of years old. After such a long sleep they are restless and bored. This makes these crazy lil' suckers do odd things. Sometimes they organize competitions to drive away the oily doldrums. What you ...er...your bike is experiencing is one of these competitions. The lil' buggers hear the engine running and are energized but no command is given to spin her up. Conditions are just right and members of the blue team (the most powerful) start to turn the wheel in the normal rotation while the red team (really pitiful examples of microbia) try to turn it the opposite way. Hilarity ensues in Mrobe world. The losing team is usually discharged in the next oil change and the winning team gets an all paid vacation in the head. If after starting your bike on the centerstand and the wheel does not turn you should do an emergency oil change at midnight on the third Monday in any month ending in "Y". But you must use Dino Oil! None of that crazy synth stuff or you will get Bots! And remember "If the wheel don't spin...you can't win!"!

Not my first bike, but the first one that I had an interest in learning the workings of. I started off on a 2002 Yamaha R6. But yes, I'm aware that a lot of my questions reveal my mechanical naivete. I'm hoping to correct that, however, and someday even be able to offer a tidbit of advice and experience now and then.

I guess free wasn't the best choice of words—I do have to pay for the advice by submitting myself to ridicule...which I'm happily willing to do.
