Grips, Grips, which Grips?????????????
09 Mar 2006 13:51
Looking for a good set of grips for my KZ650. Somthing that will be comfy for extended periods and will isolate the vibrations somewhat.
Any recomendations?

Mine are made by Grand Touring. They're pretty firm, but don't buzz my hands when I ride.
I've seen grips that have a 'fin' on the right grip. It looks like a shark fin, and you can lay your hand on it to hold the throttle without gripping. Don't know who makes it.
Here's what the Grand Touring grips look like:

All I've ever used was the Grab On foam grips. I get good grip, no buzzing and they're comfoy.

With my vibrating-like-crazy twin, I needed something cushy, but not too much. Here's what I chose, and they are awesome. Absorb vibration, but still firm enough. About 1/4 inch of foam all around.
My grips, ProGrip Custom Style 860 grip.

I have Grand Touring grips, too, and I can't wait to replace them. My hands get numb after about 20 miles. They are soft, though.

I've tried tons of grips. A couple things you have to consider for comfort on a long ride that most don't realize.
A grip may be really soft and comfortable, but slippery to hold. This is the "foam" grips, and other grips that are soft with no ridges. What these do is aggravate your hand muscles by the fact you have to grip harder to maintain grip and throttle position. Another factor against the foam grips is the diameter is too large to remain comfortable on a long ride. Any grip larger diameter than your stock grips are going to get old fast. Shorter grips and extremely soft rubber grips may seem fine but also do not work. Soft rubber will sit in your hand and feel like a heater with no air circulation and also wear quickly. So my recomendation? Stay original! Yes the grips feel hard, which is not all bad, have uncomfortable ridges, which actually "are" comfortable if you understand their purpose.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I've tried a bunch of different grips on different bikes over the years, my favourite is the old Superbike grip. Good solid feel, and good vibration damping.
