Does anyone know how much oil to put in the front forks on a '82 1000 LTD? Just replaced the seals and just need to fill them up, also are there any suggestions on a brand and weight to use?

If the forks are dry, My 82 GPZ1100 B2 shop manual lists using SAE 10W20 oil. For the KZ/Z1000-J 327 + - 4cc

For the KZ/Z1000-K
KZ1000-M351 + - 4cc

hey buddy according to my factory 81 manualit should take351cc+-4cc and if you want to get technical with the springs out of it and fork completly compressed it should have a measurement from the top of the tube to the oil of 184+-2mm the 82 is virtually the same so i think you would be safe with those quanitys depending on your weight and wether you are riding 2 up a lot i would use ether 10wt or20wt. hope that helps.

Be careful to assure front end is supported when removing fork caps so the bike doesn't suddenly and unexpectly dive down in front and possibly tip over.

Ease the front end completely down to fully compress the forks.

Add oil to the level as noted by timebomb33.

Replace springs.

Assure front wheel is suspended with tire off the floor, so forks are fully extended.

Fab a dipstick from a wood dowel or whatever and mark the dowel at the top of fork tube and at level of oil.

Next time, just use the dipstick to show the level with front wheel suspended, and without having to bother with spring removal and collapsing the front end.

Good Luck! :)

Regarding the brand - I have used BelRay since day one and have never had leaking seals or other such problems. I use 15W, but you may want a more pliable or firmer ride so you may want to experiment with 10W, 15W, and 20W. You can mix different weights of BelRay if you want to fine-tune things, but I've never found that necessary. Ed
