gpz/kz whel swap?
18 Feb 2009 16:59
Does anyone have knowledge about swapping a rear GPZ wheel to a z1 swingarm? The size of the rim is correct but I am not sure about the hub assembly. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Lewie

Paul (pz1morton) may be able to help you.
He's got GPz wheels on his KZ650, and owns a few Z1/kz1000s as well:

The KZ650/750/900/1000/1100 1973-1982 all had the same swing arm dimensions. As long as you are going from a rear disc to a rear disc it is a simple swap. There was a slight difference on the inter gusset when the bike used a 16" wheel but even these will work. If hoever you are talking about a 83 or later wheel that I do not know.

My 650 had a gpz750 rear wheel in the stock 'arm. I believe a gpz1100 wheel will fit, the bushings will have to be turned down a little. To accomadate(?) the heb thickness. I don't remember what mine was, but it also fit the 1000 swinger that I am using, but the axle shaft bearings are bigger on the 1100.
Hope that helps some.

Thanks bdog and otto!! Sounds like only the bushings need to be adapted, if at all. Appreciate the help!

Hi Lewis
well what i have on my bike is a 82 gpz750 rear swing arm which is almost the same as a z1's, just alittle longer.but to answer your question it should fit no problem as long as you are going with disc set up also you will have to use the gpz hub and bushings or go with the z1 hub and play with the bushing also be careful of rear wheel alignment, and your chain alignment.other than that you should be good to go.if any problems let me know.send me an e-mail.
Regards Paul

Thnks Paul,
I am looking at possibly switching over to an 83 GPZ 550 or 750 wheels. I have rear sets that will align nicely to the rear disk set up. I have an aftermarket "MR. Turbo" swingarm that is the same length and width as stock, just much beefier and stronger. I can get the GPZ wheels with Disc's for a good price and just wondered if the swap would be much trouble. Thanks for the info!!
