I used a Axle from a KZ1300. You can buy the new pretty cheep or do like I did, get one off of eBay. They fit perfectly.

I know most people that do this swap use Suzuki shocks. I got some but the upper shock mount doesn't fit. The stud is too big (or the hole is too small). What is the best way to remedy this?

The shocks I have on mine are made for a GoldWing:angry: Dirty word I know but they are perfect. I bought the same Suzuki shocks and had the same problem. The GS swing arm has the mounts set a bit farther back because it is longer. This gives the bike a "Squaty" appearance. The GW shocks are an inch longer and make the bike look right, and handle much better.

The shocks were a direct bolt on. Took about ten minutes to mount them. Because the GS swingarm is a bit wider I put a couple spacers between the frame and eye to bring them out about 3/16 on each side. The shocks I bought at BikeBandit.com I can give you the part # if you are interested.
