This is a continuation of the KZ1000P Swingarm thread -but I am starting a new thread on the topic of comparing a KZ1000 swingarm to a KZ650 arm, for future archive/search purposes, as I am no longer talking about the KZ1000P swingarm

Re:KZ1000 vs KZ650 SwIngarm - 2006/02/17 13:16
the last one i used was an 80 1000 ltd, whats the width on the front of yours lets compare notes, ive got one laying here somewhere.... Unquote...

Measurements of the 78 KZ650B arm across the bearing tube, without the rubber seals is 8 27/32 inches

Measurement of the 77 KZ1000 arm in same area w/o seals - 9 inches

So I have basically 5/32 to trim off of the KZ1000 arm to get it to fit into the KZ650 frame. Will probably try to do this on a sanding disc table so I can keep it square

I also measured the inside tire clearance of both arms at equal points - you get about 1/4 inch extra width in the KZ1000 arm, at 13 inches fwd from the axle c/l, or about 5 3/4 inches inside the arm

Outside tubular dia of the KZ1000 arm vs the KZ650 arm is about 1.6 vs 1.5, so you do get some extra beef there

Well thanks wireman - I think you are just confirming my KZ1000 swing arm measurement of 9 inches at the bare pivot tube is correct - when you add the seals on each side, the frame measurement of 9 1/4 sounds about right. Looks like I still have a job to do to trim the KZ1000 arm to fit the KZ650 frame, it is definitely about 5/32 smaller on the frame

All done tonight, went very easy. I used some of that aluminum metal HVAC tape to mark off an even 5/64 trim line around each side of the KZ1000 Swingarm pivot tube (after removing the needle bearings). The aluminum tape makes a very sharp line on the edge. I then just ground the ends of the pivot tube down to the tape line using a disc grinder - the tape line made it easy to keep it even. I them finished up the faces with a big flat file to really square them off right to the line, I think it is squarer and flatter now than was from the factory! Worked perfectly and the KZ1000 arm now slides nice and tight with the rubber seal ends into the KZ650 frame - looks completly stock of course. Have to still trim the bearing sleeve the same amount.

Does the 650 brake assembly and wheel assembly fit with the 1000 swingarm? Mine is bent and I need to replace it, and I like the idea of a beefier arm. Also, does the swap change where the wheel is? Do you gain any swingarm length?

Thanks, Rob

P.S. If anyone has a spare 650, 750, 900 or 1000 swingarm available, I would love a PM

I just replaced my 650 swingarm with a 1000 arm and the spacing where the rear wheel attaches is different. My old 650 swingarm was 9-5/16" and the 1000 arm is 9-1/16". I had to grind a bit on the 1000 arm to get it to fit within the frame rails and now that part is perfect.

Do I need different spacers for my hub or should I just grind down the ones I have, or grind down the brake arm? I need to get 1/4" smaller...

its alot easier if you get the complete swingarm, brake and wheel off a donor bike;) when i converte my z1 over i used a 77 kz1000 swingarm and back wheel i used a rear master cylinder off an 80 ltd with a remote resivoir to clear z1 sidecover.frontend and wheel were off a kz650 so i could use matching 4 bolt rotors on front and rear;)

Now you tell me. My problem was a bent swingarm and I didn't want to have to replace everything. The brake and my wheel are perfect, so I didn;t want to have to spend the dough to replace them. Can I just use different spacers?
