Looks like my chain took a sh*t... was created by BeeSting
Finally got my bike smoothed out - it was embarrassingly simple. Now something else????

Geeze - started hearing a rattling and what do ya know - the chain dropped down/got saggy or something. Looks like its been rubbing all day and it tore up some stuff just below it (part of the muffler mount maybe?) So I'll be looking at it closer in the daylight tomorrow.

My question - How quickly can you stretch a chain? It is something that can happen suddenly? Or maybe it was a little on the loose side and it caught on something?

Well I needed a new rear tire anyways. Looks like it'll be a 2-fer.

Any assistance would be great.

The chain stretched or became loose enough for side travel to hit your tire as well? Holly crap!

Chains will stretch over time but I've never heard of them stretching that much from one ride to another.

Did your rear swing-arm chain adjusters come loose?

Without knowing your riding style, always jumping on the throttle, extreme stunt riding, burn outs etc... the chain would stretch quicker.

I have to ask (not trying to insult here), is this one of those chain/sprocket conversions (Meaning went from a 630 to a 520)that has been discussed in the forum?

If so, this could provide some insight to the situation where due to torque and under specification rated chain tensile strengths...

years ago while on a vacation, the chain started slapping going through Denver, it was way loose, we checked them before we left that morning, so I would say yes it can get loose all at once.I really think it was a combo of the chain and sprockets wearing
btw, we couldnt find a chain, but a shop loaned us a breaker and I bought a master link, took one link out and rode until I was able to buy a chain and sprockets

Loosen yes (Did your rear swing-arm chain adjusters come loose), stretching this much, highly doubtful from one ride to another.

BSKZ650 might be onto something regarding the sprockets...

No issue with changing out sprockets - its standard and stock as far as I know. I'm going to look at it close when I get home today (walked to work this morning!).

I'll update later tonight.

Alright, I took another look at the damage. It looks like the chain slacked at some point and tore through something belong the chain/connected to the left muffler mounting bracket. It tore through some kind of rubber stopper - which is now pointed up. Is that the stopper for the bike stand or something?

It looks like I have some fabrication to do if it's an important part to have. Besides getting a new chain.

Any 630 chain recommendations?

Ok I looked at it again. It's definately the piece that attaches to the rubber bumper for the bike stand. Looks like it snagged the chain somehow. My boss's significant other is going to pick it up on a trailer tomorrow. He has a spot in his garage and all the tools.

He's a Harley guy and he keeps referring to my bike as a "scooter". What's that about? Am I going to have to shut him down after he puts a new chain on or what?

Another warning sign for chain wear. It just happened to me. After a ride and the chain is still hot, I like to occasionally oil it, even though it's an O ring chain, like I'm sure most of you do. Last time I did, with the bike up on the centerstand in gear, it threw out a broken O ring. So now it has to be oiled more frequently 'til I get a new chain. That link with no O ring will be the first to wear faster than the others.

It is hard for me to believe that as a rider... a chain must be watched closely. They will stretch and adjust out from new but, when they are worn out you have to watch them and replace them. Sprockets and chains and tires are cheap compared to a emergency room visit. Replace it all.......ride safe.
