Chains can wear fast if using crap chain oil like PJ1, don't use it. Like I've said before I get 30,000 miles out of a chain at a minimum and got 60,000 out of the last. Yes some orings threw off, I got another 30,000 miles after this happened. Probably most readily available chain lube is in the same boat as PJ1 meaning it's complete crap, meant to minimize cleanup. Minimizing cleanup=no lube, so throw away the chain after 6000 miles, bad enough, but 98% of guys don't lube at all which is even worse (marginally than PJ1 but still worse). Worth it?

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I just got the cover open and it appears as if the large nut for the front sprocket is loose. Is that normal??? There is a some kind of lock washer that is bent to keep the nut from turning much, but there is still play. Is it supposed to be tight?

In case you're not joking....
By no means is this to be loose... On the KZ900, it's torqued at ~ 87 - 108 ft lbs.... Once torqued, the tabbed washer is to be bent on the bolt flat side to insure it doesn't come loose....

This counter sprocket nut coming extremely loose or backing off could one cause severe injury during a ride (death). Two could cause sever lower end damages (output, drive, clutch and crank shafts/gears. Basically stating, NOT a good thing to happen...

If there's no visible damage to the countershaft sprocket is there a flatness spec I should be looking for to determine if it should be replaced? or replace it anyways?
