Ebay master cylinder was created by patmann
Here's the deal, I bought a used 1977 1000 LTD front master cylinder off a guy on e-bay. It's a 5/8" bore :) just what I wanted / needed for $25.00 shipped. :) Too good to be true??
I asked if it had any problems like needing a kit, or ANYTHING. He claimed it worked fine, and pumped up great.
Well I got it, it feels like new, but only pumps out a small drible of fluid:( When I opened it up it had caked goop at the bottom of the cylinder. I rinsed it out and have tried and tried for at least 20 minutes anyway, and still it's no better. But when I put my finder over the brake line hole and pump it, I have a STRONG suction on my finger! I mean to the point it leaves a ring on the tip!
But still only a drible of fluid coming out.
So do I..
(A) Order a kit and try to rebuild it.
(b) Keep working it in hopes it comes out of it.
(C) Take it to my local Ski-doo shop ( I work there too )
and use the parts washer or ultra sonic cleaner.
(D) Write the guy and tell him it doesn't work and see
what he'll do about it.
(E) Put it on the shelf next to the other four in need of
kits I have and call it a day. And continue on my
hunt for the working 5/8" bore.

Thanks for any input, I have never rebuilt a master cylinder so that does scare me:unsure:

Typical Ebay deal. Id rebuild anything brake wise I got off there. You will waste more time & postage then the $25 will ever cover. I think thats the one that you need a real long pair of snap ring pliers to get in there far enough to get the snap ring out. The rest is fairly simple

Not that I know of. A snap ring holds everything inside, remove it, remove the guts, hone the cylinder, clean with alcohol, apply lube and reassymble assuming the hole isnt all pitted up, bench bleed , install on bike with hoses and bleed system

My FSM has section drawings of both master cylinders. Not a step by step rebuild guide.

If you haven't tried it, I'd install it and it might work. Hard to tell really without having the lines all hooked up.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I've changed out masters on many things in the last 51 years and never had one act like this ( that worked ). It just dribbles the fluid. Not even a little squirt.
I really don't like bleeding my dual front brakes either, so I'd prefer to know first..
But you think it might work huh..?
I'll ponder it, as I know you have put more miles than I have on.
The poor old gal only has 143,xxx miles on her.

FSM = factory service manual. Correct snap ring pliers may be tough to find that will reach in there

I could be wrong definately. In all these years and Kawasaki's I've had a total of (2) master cylinder problems. If it's one of those round master cylinders, those are without a doubt hard to get the clip out of. If it's the newer trapazoid shape, those come apart with a simple screwdriver pry.
