Police trees worth the hassle? was created by steve3408
Has anyone actually put the police triple trees on their KZ and made it all work ok? The fork tubes are like a mm or so different in diameter, and the axle has to be from the P model also, along with spacing for the fender mount, but is it worth all that hassle for just a little wider forks?
It sounds like a good upgrade to be able to use the wider tires,...but? is it worth the hassle and expense?

I put police (Kz1000C) frontend on my 1000. All bolt up stuff as far as the gauges and chassis goes. I swapped in a Zx11C front rim but that didn't require a lot of mods. I didn't notice a big difference over the standard forks but I don't push the bike all that hard do to lower ground clearence as a result of the smaller diameter front rim.

What diameter are the police forks? '84 GPZ1100 are 37MM. I'd like to do a conversion but rather make it period correct, old school. Just bigger fork tubes. Not all the work and hassle of way bigger modern, or USD. Something like when Honda first raced the second generation F bikes in superbike. They had skimpy 35MM forks. They swapped them out on Freddie Spencer's bike for 39 MM forks from the Gold Wing. I thought about KZ1300 forks, but they are leading axle and create their own set of problems. I'd like to know if there is anything out there that is around 40 MM that will go into the steering stem with little modification. I don't mind retaining the stock wheels and spec tires. Since I had this new, I've always been unhappy with the flex I feel from the 37MM forks and the premature wear of the valve springs in the anti-dive hardware. If this isn't doable this way, I figure it can't hurt to add a Tarozzi or ATK fork brace.

early nineties zx6e trees bolt up and the forks are 41mm. If you also get a set of trees from a 95-97 zx6r you get the adjustable forks and slab top yoke. Then have the stem pressed out and replace it with the one from the e model and done! I have all the parts is why I know and am still waiting to make the swap myself, but I have a lot of work in my front end now ('89 katana 750 with progressive springs and clip-ons) or it would be done already. Hope this helps. Oh they are conventional style forks.

Bdog,
Early ninties ZR6E looks like a good way to go.

The 40MM from the '86 1000R looks the easiest, if you're just boring out the stock clamps. I had considered that long ago and now actually see one in your bike, kano. Really nice, but I thought going that route might compromise the strength of the stock clamps after removing the material.
I guess you would know. If you've been riding it long enough, is that a concern?

I'm 98% sure the older police forks are 38mm.
