Servicing Air Shocks

Alright, so in a fit of avoiding thesis writing, I removed my air shocks from my KZ750 spectre to change the oil in them, repaint them, and get them back up to spec. However, I have run into issues I feel unable to solve.

First, the haynes' manual said to pump out the old oil, but I found compressing the shocks to be nearly impossible. is this right? I basically had to put a rag on the floor and put my body weight against it. hmmm

Also, my boots are way destroyed, but I can't figure out how new rubber boots could be put on. How does that work? Anyone done this?

(1982 KZ750-N1 still stolen)
