chain length?

I am in the process of putting a 6 in. over swingarm on my 900 and was wondering if anyone may know how long of a chain i will need? i am planning on running a 15/38 combo on sprockets. thanks

If you are going 6 inches longer you will need one a foot longer than the original if you were using the original sprockets. How much difference is in the 15/38 than the original?

the stock ones or at least the ones on it are 15/35, not sure on the stock number of chain links though. thanks for the help

Stock gearing is 15/35.

Stock chain is 630/92 links.

A 630 chain with 92 links would be 69 inches long according to my calculator. 92 * .75 being the spacing on the pins of 630 chain. So adding a foot, 12 / .75 would be 16 more links or a total of 108 links.
If you switch to 530 chain it would be, length of 81 /.625 the length of a 530 link or 129.6 links. A 128 or 129 link chain should work fine. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will chime in.

i have a 3 over on my kz 1000 it has a 630 o ring chain that is 100 pins, i have a 6 over on my other kz 1000 and it has a 630 o ring with 110 pins.im not sure but if you go with a none o ring chain the length may be shorter.hope this helps.

You may take tape ruler and run it around the front and rear sprockets and add 3 more inches and give your suppliers how long it is they should be able to match it from that. It's always good to have a little more than you need you can always take a few links out. My bike swing arm rear tire is about 3" longer than stock. my 630 chain is 78 inches long 16/40 gears. I move to a 525 chain.

Measure the center of the output shaft to the center of the axle in inches. Divide by .75 and double (for top and bottom).
i.e (28" / .75") x 2 = 74.67 links

Count the number of teeth on both sprockets and halve this count.
i.e 15 + 35 = 50 / 2 = 25 links.

So roughly 99.67 links or 100 links in this example (remember you have to order in even number of links). You need to add a small amount for the difference in sprocket sizes although this ends up being an insignificant amount in the scheme of things (99.67 versus an accurate number of 99.94 links).

If you want to call us, we go through the calculation a little more accurately with a utility that calculates this very accurately based on the sprocket sizes and the distance between the outputshaft and rear axle.

Regarding chain length - I want to add more teeth to my front and rear sprockets while keeping the same chain size and swingarm length.

Do I simply need as many more links as I'm adding teeth??

For example, let's say I have a 15t front and a 35t rear (50 teeth total). I would like to go to a 18 front and a 42 rear (60 teeth total). Do I need a chain that is 10 links longer?? That seems too long.

Maybe add 1/2 of the extra teeth? Would I need 5 more links for this change? I used to know this stuff - it's hell getting old...:S

Hi, new rider here (just passed MSF course still need license). Just for s**ts and giggles what exactly does adding extra inches to the swingarm do to the ride? Just curious.

Welcome! The main idea is to limit wheelies for a quicker launch when drag racing. It also adds high speed stability. The drawback is that it usually hurts the performance in the corners. And, of course...it LOOKS COOL!! :laugh:
