beefier kickstand for '79 KZ1000 ST? was created by onanysunday
Hello,

I have a '79 KZ1000ST-recently purchased. I noticed the kickstand is slightly bent, the bike leans to the left side a little lower than normal. All that is preventing its demise is a kickstand no thicker than my finger. My question..

Are there any other kickstands out there that will fit the stock mounting hole and spring tension post, perhaps another model with thicker gauge steel and a rubber foot on the end for added traction and stability? Any ideas?

If anyone has done this conversion, or has a part number, let me know, maybe I can find one on Ebay if I know what to look for. Thanks.

Cant offer any help on a conversion. But to correct the lean problem you refer to. If its bent, could'nt you remove the thing from the bike, clamp it in a vice heat it up with an oxy/acytelene torch and straighten it out a little at a time till your happy?

The KZ900LTD (1976) didn't come with a center stand because the pipes interfere. So Big K provided a beefed up side stand. Don't know about how it might fit on your frame. Also don't know how rare it is. And finally, I don't if other LTD models made after '76 (like the KZ1000LTD) also have a stronger side stand.

I have the same bike and pretty much the same lean. Don't worry about the lean unless is is excessive (photo?) As for the diameter of the shaft to the weight of the bike I wouldn't worry. Now if you're a fairly big guy and like to sit on the bike with the stand down then maybe... naw, the weak point is the frame fitting where it attaches, it is about a 3/16" thick piece of flat steel welded to the frame loop.

The foot size on the end of the kickstand is about normal for bikes built back then, get one of those plastic or metal kickstand coasters from eBay or a shop. You can use just about anything really though as long as it doesn't crush up under the weight of the bike on it. That'll save it from falling over on soft surfaces.

Oh and nice avatar!

have you gotten anywhere on this? mine's at the point where if it gets any lower, I'll be laying it on the case guard and the stand at the same time! I haven't had the occasion to park next to another KZ since I've had it so I'm at a loss as to what the correct angle of the stand and mount "should" be. The KZ has a 2"X6" flat on the ground under the stand and my V65 Magna still sits at less angle without the extra wood!

Any help will be appreciated!

Have you checked the mounting tabs on the frame? After time the outer tab tends to get bent outward. The kick stand when wiggled with your hand may be very loose. I've used a hammer and tapped it back in. You may have a bent stand but check the tabs also. ;) If all else fails try this!!

When leaned over on side stand, the 79/80 KZ1000E1/E2 lean quite a bit farther than most any other KZ model. While the lean angle seems excessive, it is normal. Bending the OEM kick stand will not help. Although the OEM kick stand seems thin, it won't bend. I suspect the only way to resolve the problem would be to weld in about 2" of additional steel to the stock kick stand. Oh yeah, the bracket isn't bent either.

would it be asking too much to get you to take a pic of your side stand in the "up" position looking straight down at it? Mine seems to stick out to the side an awful lot and is definitely banana shaped (to the point that only the "heel" of it touches the ground)

I know I'm gonna replace it, but still have to convince myself that it's bent!
