In case mine is not worth fixing I'm just checking to see if anyone has bought this master cylinder and what they think of it.

This will be going on my 78 KZ650 with dual disc.

Looks like a 14mm which is same size Kaw used on single disk and increased to 5/8" on dual disks.

Here's a link regarding possible over-sensitivity of front brake where Kaw 14mm m/c is used to replace a 5/8" m/c on dual disk system.

Not saying it won't work or even be comparative to the Kaw 14mm, but thought you might be interested in considering before deciding.

Sure looks good in the pictures, and I've wondered about it too. The seller does say it fits bikes with the dual disks.

I purchased one of these cylinders in the proper configuration for a single disc brake up front on my CX500 last year. No problems to report thus far. Works great and all metal construction. Mine included the proper switch and plug for the brake light too.
For the price, I would recommend them.

Perhaps restoration is feasible. Not too difficult, and may depend on determining condition of bore (not too pitted). :)

Sometimes only cleaning is needed. Maybe a new primary cup and possibly piston. Assuming these parts might still be available as they are for the larger KZ's. :)

Well I don't know yet as I can't get the screws out of it at the moment. The only thing I'm sure of is the brake fluid looked like used motor oil when it came out. :sick:

Well thanks to a buddy and his impact driver I got all of the screws out with no damage. Here is a picture of the inside (sorry about the crappy pic)

Yup, that's about as gummed up as mine was.

You're going to need to remove those two phillips-head screws to be able to pull the plastic reservoir off of the cast body, which will provide you access to both holes (inlet and outlet) leading into the piston bore.
You want to make sure those holes are clear and unobstructed, or you'll never be able to get a firm brake.

You'll find an o-ring between the reservoir and the cast body, but Kawi does not show this as being available seperately.
After cleaning everything up, I simply took the reservoir and cast body into my local Pep Boys Super Center and matched one up. It put me out a whole $0.65. :whistle:

Two years+ and LOTS of miles later, and it still works perfectly w/out any leaks. B)

You should be able to match up an o-ring at just about any auto parts store that offers an assortment of 'em.

I had pretty decent pressure before, should I find a rebuild kit as well or just replace the O-ring?

Lucky you, and your trapezoid shaped 650 master cylinder. I found this link last year after searching forever for a rebuild kit from all the usual places. No one seemed to make them. Even Jeff at Z1 said he would have to buy separate parts from Japan to make me one. All I could find were kits for the round masters, never the trapezoid shaped.
Until one day I was at Redline Cycles and saw this "kit". They will assemble it for you, and despite the webpage saying it is for the master on a 78 KZ1000A model, be assured this is the exact same master on our 650's.
Now you have two choices, one modern looking on ebay and one kit keeping your original master cylinder, as long as the bore is still good.

Nope. That kit is for the B1 model, which has a round master cylinder.. If you have a true 78 B2 model, and it seems you do because the cylinder you show is trapezoid, that kit from Z1 won't work.

Here is a Magura master on ebay now, 16mm. Should be ok for a dual disk , it's 16mm . tinyurl.com/38bupl

I saw a 15mm master too, don't have the link. Search for "15mm master cylinder" and search descriptions too.

I had one. Used it and gave it away... Doesn't have the firm feel on my dual front disc as the Shindy I just bought. The Shindy is adjustable and is 5/8". With the new pads Galfer Lines and turned rotors, pulling on the brake handle is like driving spikes into the ground... Stoppies are much more exciting.
