stator rotor was created by mark1122
My rotor has spun on the end of the crank and scored the crank end. I have decided to have the crank end removed and replaced ( about $85 plus a donor crank). The question is: If I should replace the 1976 end with a 1979 end will I have any issues with the new alternator? Can I just get another rotor and stator and cover and plug the new stator in the same way the old one was? Or am I going to have a wiring nightmare? I noticed on Z1 enterprises there rectifire/regulator upgrade was only good on the 76 style rotor years(73 to 78) The reason I would prefer the 79 is the bolt that holds on the rotor is larger and torques to 95 ft lbs. instead of 18 ft.lbs. on the 76.

im guessing youre gonna split the cases and pull crank to do this, wouldnt it be easier to just swap cranks if you are going to all that trouble?

Then I would have the added expence of a good crank versus an old crank with a good end for the donor, and a true and weld job.

79-80 has a differant style stator, cover and reg/rec you have to match everything together;)

As long as both bikes use 3-phase, permanent-magnet alternators, the 3-phase, solid-state combo reg/rec (meant for a 76 KZ 900) should work on both bikes, but you may have to splice wires if the connectors don't match up wire-for-wire.

The 79/80 reg/rec will work fine with an early style stator/rotor set up. The 79/80 reg/rec has three yellow wires to hook to the AC off the stator, a brown sense wire to hook to any brown switched DC in the area of the stator, a black wire for ground and a heavier gauge white/red wire that is your DC out that splits and goes to the battery and 20A main fuse in. I have mixed a 79/80 reg/rec with an earlier style stator/rotor and the reverse and both work fine.
