Left you a PM response Steve but don't know how to attach a photo in that category so here's what i was talking about. Since i always strip them down for sheath/wire and that wire-thru rubber block replacement here's what i'd be sending looks like. I'm sure your wiring assembly is fairly new so just transplant it to what i'm sending. 3 solder points, position sheath within stator metal tang clamp, reinstall.

Do you test each leg to the case for shorts? What I don't understand is all three of them are tied together at the end of the lines so how can one leg be shorted but not the others? This is what I've found on all the bad ones.

Don't have an immediate resolve for Just one leg burning out of stator check but check any rubbing crap that could poise this issue. Maybe one of your cats'    diabolical intention of keeping you planted at home, ha. Here's what you're getting my Friend. I pack for success. Postage, just ya know, donate to this forum. I was going to buy you a hooker for companionship but maybe this might be more useful hehe.

This doesn't make a lot of sense - is it a "dead short" (0.0 ohms resistance) on the bad leg or what reading are you getting to the case ? what is the resistance between the two good legs and also between one good leg and the bad one ?

When I test the one leg it is shorted while the others aren't. What gets me is in a running test all three are showing 70-80+ vdc at rpm. If I could isolate the stator from the case it wouldn't be a problem. I'm going to try some things today.

redoing the shelac varnish on the coils might do the trick
