How to test a SH775 R/R

My stator developed a short in one of the three legs. I bought a new one and it was putting out 13.5-14 volts while running but it stopped working like the last one in a couple months. I suspect it's in the R/R and how I should go about testing it.

I'm also troubleshooting a charging system issue on my 1983 kz1000.
My system is over charging, so suspect the Reg/Rec.
Testing for it is here:

The Rick's Reg/Rec I bought has a list of checks to make before installing the new R/R.
Good to check all these items:

SWest is using a non-stock part, so I am not sure the factory tests will be valid, unless they are from one of the machines that came with that particular piece.

Are you currently using a 5 or 6 wire reg ? (does it have a brown ?) if 6 what is the voltage on the brown when the engine is running ?

The SH775 is 5 wire.

Check the AC output of the alternator.  There should be about 75 VAC out of each pair of legs.  No load voltage is not definitive, but it's a good starting point.  Test with the stator wires not connected to the bike otherwise.   I've tested about two dozen SH775s and never saw a bad one.  Make sure the stator feeds directly into the SH775.  For output, you can either feed the power output direct to the battery, or split it, feeding both the bike and battery.  This is the ideal hookup; from a Suzuki GS bike...

The SH775 is 5 wire.

Ed my response was in relation to Rob's 1100R (didn't know if he was still on the OEM set up)

The SH 775 is a series R/R not a shunt one like OEM. It is made to turn off one leg so as to not overcharge the battery while shorting one leg to ground that will in time burn out the stator (cause a short}. I have two but one doesn't seem to work now while the one I'm running stopped working. The last stator had a short on one leg. I fear this new one has gone the same way. It's now at 12.4vdc while riding.

The new Reg/Rec I will try first has 6 wires.
I will test power on the brown when I get around to firing her up again.
I'm waiting on a new fuse box, and it's plug gets sandwiched bewteen the two metal plates on the left side where the 6 (4 in my case) connectors sit.
