Biggest issue with the early bike fuel level sensors and early guages that ive found is they have very little damping. Getting accurate (ish) reading on the guage whilst riding is virtually impossible as fuel sloshing around or surging to the back when accelwrating or front when braking makes the guage needle swing all over the place.
only time mine shows with any accuracy is when stopped on level ground and the bike upright.
Wookie if you can devise a simple retro fit inline circuit between sensor and guage which would dampen the signal id be interested ! Even better if it could be variable.
0 ohm resistence is full on the guage and 100 ohm resistance is empty.
The sender is effectively just an variable resistor in the positive feed to the guage.
challenge set. 🤣
(please move if required, dont want to hijackthe thread.)

I think the "in-line" unit in the video posted will probably do just that as it converts 3 fixed points into a linear output. Ultimately fuel, temp, oil pressure etc gauges are basically voltmeters - that is why temp gauges use an NTC (negative temperature coefficient) sensor so that as the heat rises the resistance reduces and the gauge reads higher
The below is calibratable and claims to eradicate fuel "slosh" reactions"  ??

Warren has a point, because the fuel gauge calibration that I'm looking at uses a "npn pulse width modulated signal" which from what I can tell just switches on and off really fast, which warns that undamped gauges can "buzz". Im not sure about the 81' gpz550 gauge that I have, but my KZP gauge is definitely damped enough.

I have a couple nos KZ1000P fuel sending units in my stash of KZ-J parts...no gasket, cover, or original packaging.

See ebay item 376973607598 listing photos for reference.

Thanks for the plug! Unfortunately the KZP sending unit won't bolt onto my kz1100a tank. Im pretty sure my tank has the circular (5?) bolt pattern.

I am unfortunately aware on the rarity of these sending units, especially because the used ones are usually junk. If anyone was confused about what sending unit my tank uses, here are pictures:

As of right now i dont really plan on using an OEM replacement because they are hard to find, expensive, and inaccurate (not that i care about accuracy). Unless a good deal on an OEM one shows up, i plan on using an aftermarket sending unit with the fuel gauge resistance converter.

The gas tank on my 82 KZ1100A-2 has the six bolt sending unit mounting base with rectangular plastic cover.

View under tank:

Seems odd both (rectangular and round) mounting bases would be used on the same bike model gas tank...

The parts diagram for my 1000K shows both types also - "go figure"  !!!!!!!!

Possibly the factory sourced them from 2 different suppliers?
